Why is the name "Gemini 4" still spreading?
In the spring of 2026, Google introduced the Gemma 4 model family. The two names differ by only one letter, so they are easily mixed up in titles, videos and social media posts. In addition, new Gemini models are constantly arriving, so based on a quickly passed news, it may seem plausible that it is already the fourth generation of Gemini.
What is Gemma 4?
Gemma 4 is the new generation of Google's open model family. Developers can work with it on their own machine or on their own system, and Google highlights agent tasks, inference, and efficient local execution. For example, the 12 billion parameter version was presented in such a way that it can also be used on an ordinary machine with 16 GB of memory with adequate compression. This is an exciting development, but not the next major version of the Gemini app.
So what's the latest Gemini now?
On July 21, 2026, Google announced the Gemini 3.6 Flash model in addition to the 3.5 Flash‑Lite and the 3.5 Flash Cyber created for security tasks. Flash 3.6 aims for better coding, knowledge work, and multimodal performance with fewer redundant tokens and fewer device calls. It is one of the latest additions to the current officially named Gemini development line.
And what is Gemini Omni?
Gemini Omni is a different direction: it can handle text, image, audio and video together as input, and then focuses on creating video outputs first.
